Description: A perennial bushy herb up to 1 metre tall with sturdy hairy stem, large fragrant furry leaves with white flowers.
Characteristics: A strong earthy and exotic fragrance.
Part of plant used: Dried leaves, usually subjected to fermentation.
Method of Extraction: after drying the leaves and young shoots in the sun, they are steam distilled.
Interesting note: In Victorian times dried patchouli leaves were placed amongst folds of Indian cashmere shawls to protect them from moths.
Mind and spirit: This is one of the oils that was found useful when dealing with anxiety and depression, it also has a significant deodorising effect.
